What Does LiDAR Actually Do on a Robot Vacuum?

LiDAR lets a robot vacuum measure your rooms accurately and build a reliable map. That map is what makes room-by-room cleaning, no-go zones, and tidy, repeatable cleaning paths work well in the app. Because it measures distance with its own laser rather than relying on room light, it can map in the dark. What it doesn't guarantee is avoiding small things on the floor.

How it works

A LiDAR sensor fires laser light and times the reflection to measure the distance to walls and furniture. On most robot vacuums it spins inside a small turret on top, scanning 360 degrees as the robot moves and building a floor plan.

With a map in place, you can split and label rooms in the app, send the robot to "kitchen only," or keep it out of a bedroom. Instead of bouncing around at random, it cleans in rows, which means fewer missed spots and less wasted back-and-forth.

What current models do with it

Roomba 105: maps with ClearView LiDAR and saves up to three maps for different levels. iRobot says it can map about 1,000 sq ft in roughly 10 minutes.
Roborock Q5 Pro: uses PreciSense LiDAR and supports maps for up to four floors.
Shark Matrix Plus 2-in-1: builds its home map with 360-degree LiDAR and navigates day or night.

Check height and small-object avoidance separately

The turret adds height. The Roborock Q5 Pro stands 96.5 mm (about 3.8 in) tall and the Roomba 105 about 4.1 in. If you want it to clean under a sofa or bed, measure the gap first. Some newer robots skip the spinning turret. The Roborock Saros 10R, for example, is 79.8 mm (about 3.1 in) tall.

LiDAR is good at locating walls and furniture. It is not a reliable way to spot a phone cable or a sock. If that matters, look for a front camera or 3D obstacle sensor as well.
