Shark Matrix vs. PowerDetect: What's the Difference?

Published · By the BotLineup editors · Prices and specs as of that date, from the pages under Sources

Summary

Broadly, Matrix is Shark's simpler, vacuum-focused line, and PowerDetect is the premium line built around mopping and a base that takes care of the mop. The catch is that Shark sells the same series with different bases, so always check which base comes in the box before comparing prices.

Matrix: vacuuming and self-emptying

The Shark Matrix (RV2310AE) is vacuum-only. It maps with 360° LiDAR and uses Matrix Clean, which covers the floor in a grid with multiple passes. Its bagless self-empty base holds up to 45 days of debris.

The Matrix Plus 2-in-1 adds mopping. Sonic Mopping scrubs hard floors 100 times per minute while the robot vacuums, and the base holds up to 60 days of debris behind True HEPA filtration. Shark describes that base only as self-emptying, with no mention of pad washing or water refill, so plan on handling the pads yourself.

PowerDetect: less mop maintenance

PowerDetect robots adjust to floor type, dirt, and edges, and several come with a base that handles the mop. The PowerDetect ThermaCharged (RV2930XE) base, for example, holds 60 days of debris, refills the robot's water tank for up to 30 days, and after every run washes the pad with 185°F water and dries it at 175°F. On the robot itself, NeverStuck lifts the mop over transitions so it isn't dragged across carpet, and Edge Detect pushes the mop out up to an inch along walls.

Which to buy

If you rarely mop, or don't mind rinsing pads yourself, Matrix covers the basics, and a self-empty base already removes most daily upkeep. If you want the robot to mop every day, a PowerDetect base that refills, washes, and dries is what keeps your hands off the pads.

Shark prices swing a lot during sales, and one robot can be listed with several base options. Read the full model number and look for "self-refill" and "wash and dry" in the base description before you buy.
