What Makes a Robot Vacuum Good on Carpet?
Summary
On carpet, suction is only part of the story. The brush has to reach into the pile, the robot has to climb rug edges and thresholds, and if it mops, it needs a reliable way to keep wet pads off the carpet. Check those three things against your own rugs and you will know whether a model will cope.
Low-pile rugs and plush carpet are different jobs
Most robots handle a thin rug without trouble. Thick, high-pile carpet is harder: some robots stall at the edge, and long fibers can wrap around the brush. Compare the maker's listed climbing height with the thickness of your rugs and the height of any door thresholds.
Combos need a plan for wet pads
If the robot also mops, find out what it does on carpet. A small mop lift may not clear a deep-pile rug. Automatic carpet detection helps, and app-based carpet zones or no-go zones give you a dependable backup.
How current models handle carpet
- Shark Matrix Plus 2-in-1: LiDAR mapping plus Matrix Clean, which makes multiple passes in a grid. Shark claims 30% better carpet cleaning than its own single-pass mode. You can set carpet zones in the app.
- eufy X10 Pro Omni: lifts its mops 12 mm on carpet and can climb obstacles up to 0.83 in.
- Roomba 105: a multi-surface bristle brush and an edge-sweeping brush, with four suction levels.
A quick rule of thumb
If thick rugs cover much of the house, prioritize climbing ability and mop handling. In a mostly hard-floor home with a few rugs, flexible room and zone settings are likely to matter more.
