LiDAR, 3D ToF, or Camera: Which Robot Vacuum Navigation Is Best?

Published · By the BotLineup editors · Prices and specs as of that date, from the pages under Sources

Summary

None of them wins on its own, because they do different jobs. LiDAR measures the room and builds the map. 3D sensors such as ToF read the shape and distance of whatever is directly ahead. Cameras identify what that object actually is. Most higher-end robots now combine two or three, so choose based on what you care about most: map accuracy, avoiding clutter, or a low profile that fits under furniture.

What each sensor is good at

LiDAR uses laser light to measure distances to walls and furniture and records the floor plan. A stable map is what makes room-by-room cleaning and no-go zones dependable.

3D ToF (time of flight) times reflected light to build a depth picture of the area in front of the robot. Structured light, which projects a light pattern and reads how it bends, serves a similar purpose.

Cameras recognize what an object is: a shoe, a pet, a cable. Knowing that lets the robot decide whether to steer wide or slow down.

Roborock Saros 10R vs. Saros 10

The Saros 10R uses a 3D ToF system with no spinning turret (Roborock calls it solid-state LiDAR), plus an RGB camera and VertiBeam side obstacle sensing. Roborock says dropping the rotating part cut the height from 10.3 cm to 7.98 cm.

The Saros 10 takes a different route: a retractable LDS (a spinning LiDAR that drops into the body), tri-laser structured light, and an RGB camera. It is also 7.98 cm tall, and Roborock describes both systems as strong performers. A slim body, in other words, is not tied to one sensor type.

eufy X10 Pro Omni

The X10 Pro Omni pairs laser navigation with AI.See, a camera system that recognizes seven categories: dirt, carpets, shoes, pets, people, daily necessities, and furniture. In dim light it switches on a supplementary light automatically.

How to decide

If detailed room control matters most, prioritize map quality. If your floors collect clutter, look for camera or 3D obstacle recognition. If you want to clean under low furniture, compare heights. With any camera-equipped robot, also check how it handles images: whether they are stored, and whether they leave the device.
