What Should You Look for When Choosing a Robot Vacuum?
Summary
Start with your home, not the suction rating. Five questions narrow the field fast: Is the floor mostly hard surface or carpet? Do pets shed? Do you want the robot to mop? How often do cords, socks, or toys end up on the floor? Is there space for a dock? Once you have those answers, the features worth paying for tend to be obvious.
Getting around vs. cleaning up after itself
Spec sheets lead with navigation: mapping, obstacle avoidance, carpet detection, room-by-room control. Those matter, but the difference you notice week to week is usually upkeep: how often you empty a bin, rinse a mop pad, or cut hair off a brush. Think about how much of that work you want to hand off before deciding how much dock to buy.
Matching features to your home
- Clutter on the floor: camera-based obstacle recognition
- Lots of carpet or rugs: carpet detection and enough clearance to climb rug edges
- Mopping: pads that lift on carpet, ideally with a dock that washes them
- Shedding pets: a tangle-resistant brush and an auto-empty dock
- Several rooms or floors: multiple saved maps and room selection in the app
Three current examples
The Roomba 105 with AutoEmpty Dock is vacuum-only. It maps with ClearView LiDAR, stores up to three maps for different levels, and the dock holds up to 75 days of debris. Shark's PowerDetect models add mopping, floor and stain detection, and bases that wash and dry the mop pad with heat. The eufy X10 Pro Omni combines laser navigation and RGB-camera obstacle recognition with a station that empties the bin and washes, dries, and refills the mops. "Comes with a dock" can mean very different things, and the price gap reflects that.
When a basic robot is enough
In a studio or a tidy apartment with mostly hard floors, reliable mapping and decent suction cover most needs. Premium obstacle avoidance and fully automatic docks pay off as conditions stack up: more rooms, pets, mixed flooring, daily mopping.
