Can a Robot Vacuum With Obstacle Avoidance Clean Without You Picking Up First?
Summary
Mostly, but not completely. Robots with cameras and 3D sensors are now good at recognizing and steering around shoes, pets, and furniture legs. Thin charging cables and small parts are still hit or miss. Treat obstacle avoidance as a way to keep the robot running through ordinary clutter, and still lift anything you would hate to see tangled in a brush.
What robots see well, and what they miss
Large, clearly shaped objects like shoes and cushions are easy for most sensors. The hard cases are cables lying flat on the floor, thin fabric, small toy pieces, and pet waste. The "object types recognized" numbers in marketing usually come from in-house testing and may not hold up in your living room.
Judge the behavior, not the sensor name
Useful questions: Does the robot use a light in dark rooms? Does it mark detected objects on the app map? How close does it clean around an object after avoiding it? If it has a camera, are images stored or sent to the cloud? When reading reviews, look for testers who checked what got missed around obstacles, not only whether the robot avoided them.
How current models detect objects
- Roborock Saros 10R: 3D sensors plus an RGB camera, with 108 recognizable object types. Roborock says no images are stored (checked September 24, 2026).
- eufy X10 Pro Omni: AI.See camera recognition for seven categories including shoes, pets, people, and furniture, with an automatic light in dim conditions.
- Dreame L60 Pro Ultra: 3D structured light, an AI camera, and an LED, with Dreame claiming 280+ object types based on its own lab data. Dreame says videos and images stay off the cloud (checked September 24, 2026).
Who should pay for it
Obstacle avoidance earns its price in homes where toys, pet gear, and laundry regularly end up on the floor. If your floors are usually clear, a solid LiDAR-mapping robot may be all you need. Either way, keep cords off the floor.
