Wire-Free Robot Mowers: Should You Choose RTK, Vision, or LiDAR?

Published · By the BotLineup editors · Prices and specs as of that date, from the pages under Sources

Summary

If your yard has an open view of the sky, RTK works well. If trees and buildings block much of it, look at mowers that use cameras or LiDAR, or combine one of them with RTK. All three skip the buried boundary wire, so when the landscaping changes you redraw the map instead of digging. Choose by your yard's sky view and obstacles, not by the label.

How the three approaches differ

RTK corrects satellite positioning (GPS and similar systems) to locate the mower within centimeters. It is steady in open yards but can lose accuracy near tall trees or buildings that block the signal.

Vision systems use cameras to read lawn edges and surroundings. They don't depend on satellites, which helps under tree cover, but check how a given model handles low light and yards where many areas look alike.

LiDAR measures distance to nearby objects with a laser and matches that against its map. Sky visibility matters much less.

How current models combine them

Where wire-free makes the most sense

Yards where beds get rearranged, lawns split into several zones, or owners who just don't want to trench a wire all benefit most. If your yard is heavily wooded with little open sky, skip RTK-only models and look at ones that add cameras or LiDAR.
