Is a Remote-Control Mower the Same as a Robot Lawn Mower?
Summary
No. A robot lawn mower cuts a set area on its own schedule and heads back to its charging station when the battery runs low. A remote-control mower is driven by a person from a distance, so it only mows while someone is operating it. Both sometimes get called a "remote mower," which is why they end up mixed together in search results and store listings.
Robot mowers (autonomous)
Once the mowing area is set with a boundary wire or a map, the robot runs on its own at scheduled times. Toro Haven uses a camera-built map and an app to define its zones, schedules mowing, and returns to charge automatically. WORX sells Landroid with a boundary wire or as wire-free Vision AI models, and Husqvarna's Automower line uses physical wire or virtual boundaries.
Remote-control mowers
An operator watches the machine and steers it, deciding where to go as they work. This group includes equipment built for steep banks and other places that are hard to reach on foot, which is a different job from handing off routine lawn care. Put one in the same comparison table as autonomous robots and neither the prices nor the features line up.
Clues in a product listing
- schedule, charging station, boundary, RTK, vision, app: common in descriptions of autonomous mowers
- remote control, RC, operator: usually point to a machine a person drives
If you want the lawn mowed without you, look for a charging station and scheduling.
