Does Your Robot Lawn Mower Need a Garage?
Summary
No. A mower house is an accessory that shields the robot from rain, sun, and debris while it sits on the charger. What matters more is placing the charging station where the robot can find its way back easily and get power safely. Winter storage is a separate question, and Husqvarna says the mower and charging station should come indoors for the season.
What a mower house does
Husqvarna says its Large Automower House protects the robot from rain, sun exposure, and outdoor debris while it's parked and charging, and helps reduce wear from weather over time. The top folds up, so you can reach the keypad and display without removing the house. It's listed at $171.99 on Husqvarna's site.
It fits the 410 iQ, 420 iQ, 435 iQ AWD, 440 iQ, 535 AWD EPOS, 560 EPOS, 580 EPOS, and 580L EPOS (as listed on Husqvarna's US site).
If you build your own cover
Keep the robot's path back to the station clear, and don't block its signal, airflow, or the space it needs to open its cover. The manufacturer's installation instructions come first.
Winter storage is its own checklist
Husqvarna's winter storage guide covers the following:
- Switch the mower off at the main switch and put on gloves before touching the blade disc. Then clean the mower and charging station, and install new blades and screws.
- Charge the mower fully, then switch it off. Most models don't need charging during storage.
- Store the mower, charging station, and power supply indoors (garage, shed, or basement), somewhere dry and above freezing (32°F / 0°C).
- Boundary and guide wires can stay in the ground over winter.
- If the charging station has to stay outside, keep it connected to mains power and to the wires using the original power supply, keep the connections dry, and protect it from the weather.
For other brands, follow that manufacturer's instructions.
