Husqvarna Automower: Should You Install It With Boundary Wire or EPOS?
Summary
EPOS makes more sense if you plan to reshape beds and paths later or simply don't want to bury wire. If wire is already in the ground and the layout isn't changing, sticking with it is fine. EPOS draws virtual boundaries from satellite positioning corrected by RTK, and those corrections come either from a reference station included in the box or, in some areas, from Husqvarna Cloud.
How EPOS works
The mower combines signals from multiple satellites with RTK corrections, which cancel out positioning error by comparing against a fixed point with a known location. Husqvarna describes the result as centimeter-level accuracy. You set boundaries and stay-out zones on a map in the Automower Connect app, and you can create several work areas with their own settings.
Two ways to get corrections
The first is the reference station that ships with the mower. Husqvarna says it works for most yards and gives the highest accuracy. It needs power and a clear 135-degree view of the sky, and if you move it after creating your virtual boundaries, you have to redo the map.
The second is Husqvarna Cloud, which sends corrections over the internet so no station is needed in the yard. It is only offered in select locations and requires a stable Wi-Fi or cellular connection across the whole mowing area. Husqvarna's site has an address checker, and the company notes that Cloud coverage is not the same as cellphone coverage.
When wire still makes sense
Heavy tree shade weakens satellite signals, so Husqvarna allows some boundary wire in those spots, though it isn't required. If your wire is already installed and your lawn isn't changing, there is little reason to switch. If you change what gets mowed by season or plan to redo part of the lawn, editing a map beats digging up wire.
Example: Automower 410 iQ
The 410 iQ is the small-yard EPOS model, with an MSRP of $2,599.99. It is rated for about 0.5 acre (±20%) and handles slopes up to 45% inside the work area and 15% along the boundary. The EPOS reference station is included, and the mower also supports a physical wire install. Cutting height adjusts electrically from about 1 to 4 inches, and it connects over cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.
Other EPOS models include the 420 iQ, 440 iQ, 435 iQ AWD, 535 AWD EPOS, 560 EPOS, 580 EPOS, and 580L EPOS.
