Will a Robot Mower Review Hold True for Your Yard?
Summary
Not automatically. The same mower can do well on a flat, open lawn and struggle in a yard broken up by trees, slopes, and narrow passages. When you read a review, look first for what kind of yard it was tested in and how often the owner had to rescue the mower, then check slope limits and rated area against the manufacturer's specs.
Read the yard before the verdict
"Handles an acre with no trouble" means one thing on a single flat lawn and something else in a yard with several separate sections. The closer a reviewer's lawn size, slopes, shade, number of zones, and passage widths are to yours, the more the review tells you.
Manufacturer numbers come with conditions too. Toro lists the terrain type for Haven as flat, and Husqvarna gives rated lawn size as plus or minus 20%.
Each boundary method fails in its own way
- Boundary wire: the work of burying it and fixing breaks
- RTK/GNSS: where the base station goes and how open the sky is
- Camera (vision): telling grass from everything else, lighting, and objects left on the lawn
- Hybrid systems: which method takes over under which conditions
Sorting complaints by method helps you tell whether a problem a reviewer hit is one you'd face with the system you're planning to buy.
Rescues say more than stars
How many times a week did the owner have to pick the mower up and help it? Why did it miss the charging station? Did it stall on wet slopes? None of that is in a spec sheet, and it describes day-to-day effort better than a star rating.
Get the numbers from the manufacturer
Look up slope limits, rated area, water resistance, connectivity, and safety features (lift and tilt sensors, PIN lock) on the product page rather than inferring them from a review. On Husqvarna's lineup alone, slope ratings on the current US models range from roughly 45% up to 70% on the 435 iQ AWD.
