How Much Does a Robot Lawn Mower Really Cost Beyond the Sticker Price?

Published · By the BotLineup editors · Prices and specs as of that date, from the pages under Sources

Summary

The extras usually come from boundary wire and installation, an RTK reference station if one isn't included, replacement blades, and eventually a new battery. Robot prices on official stores run from about $300 to nearly $6,000, and some of the cheapest need the most setup work. Separate what you need to spend to get started from what you'll spend each year, and the real cost gap becomes clear.

Example prices from official stores

These are manufacturer store prices, and sales can knock off several hundred dollars. They are examples, not market highs or lows.

Up-front costs

Boundary-wire mowers require running wire around the lawn; locate irrigation lines and low-voltage lighting cables before you trench. Larger or irregular yards may need extra wire, and hiring an installer adds labor. For RTK mowers, the starting cost depends on whether a reference station is included, sold separately, or replaced by a network service. The station needs a clear view of the sky, so factor in the effort if it has to go on a roof or pole.

Ongoing costs

Blades wear out and need regular replacement, so check the price and availability of genuine replacements before you buy. Batteries degrade over years, so make sure replacements are sold; use the manufacturer's pack and recycle the old one at a battery drop-off. For mowers that use network RTK or cellular data, find out how long service is included in the purchase price and what happens after that.

A simple way to compare

List three numbers for each model: the robot price, the equipment and installation needed to start, and yearly consumables. That shows how much of a price gap is real.
