Do You Need More Than a Floor Cleaner for an Above-Ground Pool?

Summary

For most above-ground pools, a robot that cleans the floor well is enough. The walls are short and the shapes are simple, so debris mostly settles on the bottom, and wall climbing or waterline scrubbing adds cost without much benefit. Focus on the maximum pool length, how heavy the robot is to lift in and out, and how easy the filter is to clean.

Match the pool length first

Above-ground robots are rated for a maximum pool length. The Dolphin Explorer E10 from Maytronics, for example, is made for above-ground pools up to 30 ft and handles rectangular, round, freeform, and kidney shapes. It cleans the floor on a 1.5-hour cycle and does not clean walls or the waterline.

Lifting it in and out

With an above-ground pool, you will often lift the robot over the pool wall every time you use it. The Explorer E10 weighs about 14.6 lb. Its filter comes out from the top, and because it is corded, you can run it back to back without waiting on a charge. There's no app or timer, so you start each cycle by hand.

Floating debris needs a different machine

A floor robot won't collect leaves and bugs floating on the surface. The Aiper Surfer S1 is a solar- and battery-powered skimmer that roams the surface collecting debris. It works in above-ground pools, but it doesn't clean the floor. Which kind of mess bothers you most decides which machine you need.

When walls and waterline matter

If your walls tend to get slimy or grow algae, or a ring forms at the waterline, widen the search to models that clean walls and the waterline. Without those problems, a floor-only robot will usually do the job.
