How Does a Window Cleaning Robot Stay on the Glass and Clean It?

Summary

A fan pulls air out from under the robot, and the higher air pressure outside presses it against the glass. While it holds on, it moves on wheels or pads, sprays a fine mist of water or cleaning fluid (only water or the fluid the manufacturer specifies should go in the tank), wipes with a cloth, and uses sensors to find the edge of the window and turn. Stronger suction alone doesn't mean cleaner glass; the result depends on how it wipes, how much water it uses, and the route it takes.

Holding on

Removing air between the robot and the glass lets outside air pressure push it flat against the window. HOBOT lists the HOBOT-298's suction force as 6.0 kg. The HUTT C7 claims up to 5,500 Pa of suction and adjusts pressure every 0.03 seconds to keep its grip steady as it moves.

Spraying

Wiping with a dry cloth tends to drag dirt around, so most models spray a fine mist first. The HOBOT-298 uses a 108 kHz ultrasonic nozzle to make droplets of about 15 microns. The HUTT C7 uses air pressure to spray droplets of about 20 microns across a 120° arc. Finer droplets spread more evenly and are less likely to run down the glass.

Route and edges

Sensors find the edges. The HOBOT-298 uses a laser sensor, which lets it turn at the edge of frameless glass without falling off, and the HUTT C7 uses 13 sensors. Route-planning software decides where to start and how to cover the pane: ECOVACS uses WIN-SLAM 5.0 on the WINBOT W3 OMNI, and HUTT uses HUTT-SLAM 4.0 on the C7.

When power cuts out

Suction only exists while the fan is spinning, so a power outage or a pulled plug can mean a fall. Manufacturers pair a backup battery that keeps the robot attached for a while with a safety tether. HUTT says the C7 holds on for 20 minutes after a power loss and that its safety rope withstands up to 148 kg of pull.
